The best solution to get rid of your damaged skin is a chemical peel. Our skin is the largest organ that covers our entire body. It serves as our protective barrier against harmful environments. Since it acts as the frontline defense of our body, it absorbs the most damages.

Specifically, the face skin is constantly exposed to sunlight, humid and polluted air, and other bacteria freely floating around. The outer skin will develop acne, wrinkles, and discolored skin. A chemical peel treatment will take off the unhealthy skin in your face and reveal more radiant and healthy skin underneath.

WHAT IS CHEMICAL PEEL?

During a chemical peel, a solution is applied to the skin during a non-invasive procedure to peel off the top layer of the skin. It enhances the condition of the skin by revealing healthier and smoother skin. A chemical peel can treat various skin condition such as:

  • Wrinkles

  • Acne

  • Discoloration

  • Scars

  • Melasma

  • Redness or uneven skin tone

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF CHEMICAL PEEL?

Chemical peel treatment can be performed in 3 different depths: Light, Medium, and Deep chemical peel.

LIGHT CHEMICAL PEELS

Light peels are safe to have regularly. You can have the treatment every 2 to 5 weeks. It removes the outer layer of the skin (epidermis) and treats the breakthrough of acne, wrinkles, dryness, and uneven skin tone. There is no actual peeling with these – they are also known as “Lunchtime Peels”.

MEDIUM CHEMICAL PEEL

A medium chemical peel removes dead and damaged skin from the epidermis to the upper portion of the dermis. Glycolic acid or trichloroacetic acid are used for this treatment. This is the type of peel we do most often here at Everglow. You will get great results with minimal discomfort and downtime peeling.

DEEP CHEMICAL PEEL

This type of chemical peel reaches an even deeper layer of the skin. It uses a substance called phenol that may bring risk to your health. Your doctor will portion the procedure to limit your exposure to the substance. These are typically done under anesthesia by a physician.

WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE OF CHEMICAL PEEL TREATMENT?

A chemical peel treatment is a safe and easy procedure. Some products allow customers to apply a chemical peel solution at home by following the instruction. But for an in-office treatment procedure, the medical provider will most likely start by asking you questions regarding your medical history, medicines you have previously taken before the treatment, and your goals for having a chemical peel.

BEFORE THE TREATMENT

Your nurse practitioner will get you ready for the procedure. They will tie your hair away from your face to not get in the way of performing the procedure. They will also provide you with something to cover or protect your eyes.

They will cleanse your face skin thoroughly and use a degreaser solution.

For light chemical peel, there is no pain. A medium peel has some stinging and mild burning, but using a fan cools it down so it is very mild. We do not do deep peels here as they require pain medications.

DURING THE PROCEDURE

During the procedure, your doctor will apply more chemical solutions to your face.

LIGHT CHEMICAL PEEL

Your doctor will apply a solution such as salicylic acid to your skin using a cotton ball, gauze, or a brush. We typically use the ZO Stimulator Peel. You will feel a slight stinging in the skin during the procedure that may take up to 10 minutes.

MEDIUM CHEMICAL PEEL

The provider will apply a solution to the face using a brush, cotton ball, or gauze, same as in the light chemical peel. For medium chemical peel, the solution usually contains glycolic acid or trichloroacetic acid. We use the ZO 3 Step Peel, Vi peels or the Perfect Derma Peel. We can add boosters to any peel to improve your results.

You may experience a stinging or burning sensation that may last up to 5 minutes.

DEEP CHEMICAL PEEL

During a deep chemical peel, the doctor will give you a sedative, monitor your heart rate, and you will be given an intravenous IV fluid. The doctor will apply carbolic acid (phenol) to the skin, which will turn the treated skin white or gray during the process. Your doctor will portion the procedure with a 15-minute interval to limit your exposure to phenol. The process will last up to 90 minutes.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CHEMICAL PEELS?

A chemical peel is an excellent choice of treatment for people with a poor skin condition. Ideally, it will treat skin conditions and problems and provide the following benefits:

  • Tighten the skin

  • Reduces the skin’s sensitivity to the environment and various products

  • Improves the skin texture and tightens the pores

  • Repairs the outer layer of the skin

  • Reduces wrinkles, creases, and fine lines

  • Corrects the abnormal surface pigmentation of the skin due to sun damage

RISKS AND SIDE EFFECTS AFTER THE PROCEDURE

Common side effects after the procedure are expected, but the symptoms will naturally go on their own or with the help of medication advised to you by your doctor. Common side effects of chemical peels are:

  • Redness

  • Dryness

  • Stinging

  • Burning

  • slight swelling

MORE SEVERE RISKS ARE PRESENT IN CHEMICAL PEELS, SUCH AS:

  • Change in the natural color. The skin color may darken or lighten. This risk is more common to people with darker skin color.

  • Permanent scarring

  • In very rare cases, the patient may develop a fungal or bacterial infection.

  • The phenol used in the deep chemical peel can damage the heart, kidney, and liver.

SAFE CHEMICAL PEELS FOR YOU

The downtime of the chemical peel depends on the depth of the procedure. It is typically just one day – Day 3 or 4 that you are peeling and won’t want to go out. You will get better results if you precondition your skin by using a retinol product at least 4-6 weeks before your peel.

PERFECT DERMA PEEL

Perfect Derma Peel is the ideal peel treatment that treats sun damage and reduces skin scarring. Its result is made even better because the solution has antioxidants from one of its ingredients, Glutathione.

The procedure will only take 15 minutes, and you will not feel any pain. Whatever skin type you have, rest assured that this treatment is safe and effective for you.
